Karyn Mac, founder of KF Music Radio, first set eyes on an accordion at the tender age of 2 years old. It was in the mid 70's, and Stuart Anderson Snr was playing his accordion in one of the famous summer seasons a the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr, Scotland. That was it - she was hooked!! Mum and Dad bought a small plastic toy accordion to keep her amused, but she wanted a proper one!
A few years later, at the more responsible age of 7 years old, she received her first lesson on a real accordion - from Jim Hutcheon in Ayr.
She never looked back.
Although she started with an accordion, and her main passion is traditional Scottish music, Karyn's has an extremely varied taste in music (occasionally, quite frankly, highly questionable!) which encompasses almost everything you can think of. (And her CD collections is massive!)
In 2005, following a strange turn of events, she ended up working in commercial radio, hosting the West Sound Ceilidh on Saturday evenings.
Karyn hosted this show from 2005 until 2013, when the West Sound studios in Ayr closed, and all shows were syndicated.
At the height of it's run, Karyn had more listeners on a Saturday evening than the "big national radio stations", proving the popularity of the show.
Later in 2013 the Ceilidh found a new home with UWS Radio until 2023, when it moved over to Ayr Hospital Radio, and still lives there from 7-9pm.
Karyn has music in her blood, her parents were both singers and Dad played guitar in the famous Tommy Truesdale and the Sundowners Band in the 1950s and 60s. (Yep, Dad was a Sundowner!)
Nowadays, Karyn still plays accordion at various events, ceilidhs, weddings, concerts, accordion clubs and for the RSCDS, as well as having travelled further afield, including a memorable trip to Corsica in 2005.
When she's not doing the day job, or playing a gig, Karyn shares her music with the world through the power of the internet, and KF Music Radio.
